The work, which will be completed by the end of October, will help ensure more than 120 businesses and residents benefit from a secure and reliable supply of power for years to come.
Engineers will be installing new underground cable and new equipment to prevent customers from experiencing any further interruptions to their power.
Sean Leape, area manager for Electricity North West, said: “This power upgrade project is a priority because we understand the frustration and the real impact it can have if you are without power.
“We've met with local businesses in the Northern Quarter and explained the impact that the area's recent growth has had on the power network as extra demand has caused strain and power cuts.
“Through this project, we'll make sure that the bustling and vibrant businesses in the Northern Quarter have the power they need when they need it so the area can continue to thrive and grow.”
Work will take place on Spear Street and Oldham Street. In order for engineers to carry out the work safely between 1st and 12th October Spear Street, near to Stevenson Square, will be closed and there will be temporary traffic lights on Oldham Street. Access to businesses and residents may be restricted at times, but we will try to keep this to a minimum during this essential works.
