£2.4m investment in Newton le Willows power network

A huge seven figure sum is being invested to upgrade part of the electricity network in Newton le Willows.

Electricity North West, which operates the region’s power network, started work on phase one of its £2.4m Borron Road project last month.

Engineers are working to replace numerous underground electricity cables stretching 6.5km which were first installed in the 1950s.

More than 33,000 customers will benefit from the improvements which are expected to last for four months and will be carried out along Borron Road, Urmston Avenue, Queens Drive, Billington Avenue, Ashton Road and the A49.

Bill Cross, Electricity North West’s project manager for the work in Newton le Willows, said: “The service we provide is critical and it’s essential we carry out the upgrades on the Newton le Willows power network.

“We all rely more and more on electricity to power our lives, so that’s why we’re proactively carrying out the work now and thousands of customers will benefit for years to come.

“Throughout the project, we’ll look to keep disruption to a minimum and we apologise for any inconvenience we may cause.”

To ensure engineers can carry out the work safely, a series of traffic management systems will be used when work is being carried out on the respective roads.

Residents in the area have been notified in advance of any works taking place.

Councillor Andy Bowden, St Helens Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, added: “The council recognises the need to improve the borough’s infrastructure for the benefit of residents - so investments like this are welcome, and while we recognise that work of this scale is likely to cause disruption to motorists, we will work with Electricity North West to ensure it is kept to a minimum.”
