‘Embedding fairness at the heart of the energy transition’ was the theme as Electricity North West shared details of its ‘DSO for good’ social model.

The North West’s power network operator shared its DSO plans at an event it hosted last week which saw more than 150 people in attendance.

Led by CEO Ian Smyth, the event attracted national and regional speakers and stakeholders, including National Energy System Operator CEO, Fintan Slye and Greater Manchester Combined Authority Group CEO, Caroline Simpson, as attendees heard about the need for continued investment in the region’s grid.

“Our social DSO model is about embedding fairness at the heart of the energy transition,” said Ian Smyth.

“By working together, we will ensure that the transition is just, fair and delivers tangible benefits through social value.

“As we move forward, collaboration will be key. Not just in shaping the network but in ensuring that it works for everyone, supporting communities, businesses, and the wider economy.”

In an event which prompted regular debate and discussion, Margaret Read, Director of Policy at National Infrastructure Commission spoke about the need to accelerate investment and that investment in distribution networks would save bill payers money overall.

It was also revealed that Greater Manchester’s economy is £80bn and is now bigger than Wales, and for the last 10 years is growing faster than the rest of the UK.

Ian Smyth added: “The transition to distribution system operation isn’t just a technical shift; it’s essential for delivering a smarter, more flexible, and more inclusive energy system. Investing and innovating now means long-term savings for customers tomorrow.

“We can only deliver the significant benefits to customers and stakeholders by working with national and regional partners, and by bringing people with us.

“Focusing on the social aspects of DSO will help more people save money and capture value both, through the roll out of flexible low carbon technology and systems.”
