A major power network upgrade continues to progress between Barrow and Dalton.

Engineers from SP Electricity North West are well underway with replacing ageing underground electricity cables with work progressing through Ainslie Street.

The £4.5m investment will benefit thousands of homes and businesses across the towns with a more reliable supply of electricity provided.

Carol Pascoe, Delivery Manager at SP Electricity North West said: “We’re making good progress and this latest phase takes us another step closer to delivering a stronger and more reliable electricity network throughout Barrow and Dalton.

“We know road works can be disruptive and we’re very grateful to residents, businesses and commuters for their continued patience whilst the work takes place. This is an important long-term investment which will help protect supplies to thousands of local customers and key services, while making sure the network is ready to meet the area’s future needs.”

SP Electricity North West's project will see five kilometres of underground cables replaced. The proactive work was identified as part of the power network operator's regular review of its assets.

As well as providing a more reliable supply, the investment will help prepare the network for the future as demand and reliance on electricity only increases with more people using low carbon technologies such as electric vehicle chargers, heat pumps and solar.

Traffic management is being used in phases to ensure the safety of the public and our engineers. All work has been agreed in collaboration with Westmorland and Furness Council to help minimise disruption.

The next phase of work will see engineers start work on Abbey Road and SP Electricity North West will continue to share information in advance with affected customers.

The project is expected to be complete by March 2028.
