Capital projects Greater Manchester

Start date confirmed for £13m Oldham investment

An Electricity North West engineer-5

A start date has been confirmed for a major electrical project taking place across Oldham.

Engineers from Electricity North West will start work on its £13m project next month.

Six kilometres of underground cables will be replaced which will transform the 132-000-volt electricity infrastructure throughout Oldham and the surrounding areas.

More than 42,000 homes and businesses will benefit from the new electricity supply which will see older, oil-filled cables replaced with more modern environmentally-friendly cables.

Vincent Cranny, Electricity North West’s head of capital delivery, added: “This is good news for Oldham residents and business as we continue our investment in the area’s infrastructure to enable continued growth and network reliability.

“We pride ourselves on the level of customer service we provide, we want this project to be a success and ensuring people are kept up to date will be a major factor.

“We’re pleased to get a date in the diary and start on this significant engineering project which will transform the electricity infrastructure in Oldham.

“Given the cables are underground there will be some disruption but the long-term benefits for the area will be well worth it. We are working very closely with the local council to keep disruption to a minimum and will ensure residents and businesses are kept updated during the work.”

One team of engineers will start work within the grounds of Electricity North West's Whitegate depot on July 1st for approximately five weeks before progressing on to Gateway Crescent and Long Lane. A second team will start on Drury Lane before progressing to Manchester Road.
